The Rotary Club of Farnham President, Victor Duckett was welcomed to 229 (Farnham) Squadron Air Cadets this week, especially as he wished to present the Squadron with a cheque for £400 towards the Squadron's Minibus Appeal.  The Rotary President accompanied by his partner Janet Maines, a past Rotary President gave a talk about the Rotary organisation and it's achievements in helping local organisations in Farnham and beyond in the wider world.  Victor explained how Rotary members across the world are working together and supporting efforts to eradicate Polio as a disease and how relief packs are sent to areas that have experienced disasters.
The cadets asked a number of questions and appreciated the opportunity of chatting with their guests informally after the presentation of the cheque.  Janet and Victor have spent years helping our community in Farnham in many different ways and for the cadets, it is important to understand citizenship and the benefits of supporting your community.  The cadets always appreciate the short talks given by our guests, it broadens their knowledge and gives them confidence to ask questions and engage in conversation, which are of course important life skills.
Victor himself had served in the Royal Air Force at the time of the Suez crisis and number of Victor and Janet's close family had served in the RAF and indeed some lost their lives during the Second World War, which made the visit to the squadron special to both of them.  Victor was very impressed by cadets, their smart uniforms, enthusiasm and team spirit, it reminded him of his time in the RAF and he paid the Squadron possibly the highest compliment 'it was just like coming home' in response to a cadet asking if he had enjoyed the visit.
